A strange play from Wednesday’s Tolendo Mudhens-Columbus Clippers game is going viral.
Clippers third baseman Ernie Clement took a hard cut at a pitch from Toledo’s Joey Wentz in the second inning and hit the ball nearly straight down. It lodged itself in the dirt about a foot in front of the plate, ruled a fair ball.
Toledo catcher Dustin Garneau from there made the not-so-routine but nonetheless simple play of taking a couple of steps, picking up the ball, and tagging Clement for the out.

By Thursday afternoon, the play, which had been tweeted out by the Mudhens, had been seen more than two million times and retweeted hundreds of times.
Clement went 0-for-3 in the game, grounding out to Zack Short in the fourth and striking out in the seventh.
The Mudhens won 4-0 to improve to 60-52.
