SAULT STE. MARIE, ONT. — Algoma Steel Group has announced that a fire occurred on Aug. 7 on one of its coal conveyors that supplies coal to two of its three coke batteries at its steel plant in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. No one was injured in the event.
Algoma is a producer of hot and cold rolled steel products including sheet and plate. The firm produces its own coke from three production units, and supplements production with purchased coke from various suppliers, explained a release. Iron and steelmaking operations are expected to continue in the normal course while the damage is repaired, as the company can continue to produce coke at a reduced rate, and anticipates it has sufficient coke inventory and supply contracts for purchased coke to support steelmaking operations.
The company is continuing to assess the damage and complete repair plans.
Algoma CEO Michael Garcia commented, “Our emergency response personnel, together with Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services, are to be commended for their quick action suppressing the blaze and containing damages without injury to any of our personnel.”
