A Reddit user is stirring up debate after admitting that they destroyed their parents’ boiler and then lied about it.
On March 15, Reddit user Lizard_sex posted to the Confession forum about what they had done. In their post, they talked about the events leading up to the explosion, the day of the explosion, and the explosion aftermath.
“My dad turned down the water heater temperature on the boiler because he thought the gas bill was too high. The shower water would only get lukewarm, part of his strategy to make us take shorter showers too. I was miserable,” they wrote.
One night after taking one too many lukewarm showers, the Reddit user went into the basement and turned the water heating temperature “as high as it would go.”
The next day when they came home from school — they were 14 years old when this happened — they discovered that the heater had exploded. In the explosion, part of the house was destroyed, and the basement was flooded. “[My parents] probably spent thousands on the cleanup and repair,” they said.
Though their dad blames himself for what happened, the Reddit user said that they “don’t feel guilty.”
“We have a new boiler now … Hot water feels nice.”
For the most part, fellow Reddit users have come to the original poster’s defense.
“To be fair, the boiler shouldn’t blow up if turned that high — that’s not what happens!” one user noted. “You may have hastened its demise, but it was obviously faulty.”
“Sounds like the boiler was garbage and it would have happened regardless,” another user reiterated.
However, some people think that the poster should tell their parents what happened, or at least offer to pay for some of the damages.
“You should put aside how much it cost, and write [your dad] a check and reveal what you did and put the check on the table,” one user suggested.
“You should find out what the deductible was for insurance. It was probably covered but he could be out 500 bucks for the insurance deductible. Someday find a way of sneaking him this money to clear your karma,” another person added.
